Some bright news: last month a group of artists and writers raised $81,600 (and counting) for the Central Vermont Refugee Action Network.
Writing a poem every day in the month of March reminded me how powerful creativity is, and how creating in community—each of us contributing what we make—is how we grow deep roots to hold us and see us through any weather.
Spring is a messy season. This morning it’s snowing big soft flakes that would be exciting in December, except the Robins recently returned and they’re out hopping around the soggy fields looking for worms. This time of year always teaches me how set backs are not permanent. A week of glorious sunshine might be followed by freezing rain and snow. Mud season roads might swallow cars. And still, crocuses pop up, leaves unfurl, summer does come.
Our country is in a messy season, and so I set my heart and mind to the rhythm of spring because I know that waking up is a choice. Planting seeds, writing poems, and engaging in community are forces that help bring people through the undertows that would otherwise have us drown. Yes, I’m mixing metaphors here. Like I said, a messy season.
I’ll be back soon with more on what we’re planting and how the farm is shifting into a new direction. Today, though, I wanted to share this poem I wrote during the March Arts Marathon:
What Binds Us
Don't let this brokenness
fool you
we all deserve love
yes, even you
see the pieces
splayed out
how light glints
on the edges
how light binds
us back together
a mosaic
where the reconnection
is the beauty
The artist who made this mosaic is Sonia King.
